Q: Is this legal?

A: Absolutely.  Ever since IRAs have been in existence, IRA owners have been able to invest assets in "alternative investments". 

Q: Why haven't I heard about this?

A:  Self directed IRAs are truly self directed.  This means that you, the owner, are responsible for where your money is invested, what it is invested in, and the other important decisions it takes to manage any investment.  Most alternative investments require some "hands on" mangement.  Most traditional investments do not (i.e. mutual funds, stocks, etc.).  When an advisor places your money in the hands of some Wall Street broker or hedgefund manager, they collect a commission for doing so.  When the investment is made, they collect a commission and their job is typically over.  Plus, the commissions are pretty attractive.

A self directed IRA reduces the need to pay huge commissions to an advisor for simply throwing a dart at a stock chart and picking an investment.  You control your IRA and you typically pay less in fees and commissions than most traditional investments.  Does it make sense now why these are not highly publicized investment vehicles?
